Sunny Pennsylvania woods

It was difficult to find the sun on this cold autumn weekend thanks to the lake effect rain and clouds coming off of Lake Erie. I managed to find some light in Pennsylvania, making the woodlands feel all the warmer in the still strong sunshine. There should still be a few more weeks before we see any snow but the birds are beginning to reflect the imminent change with kinglets, always a sign of October to me, filling habitats like this.

Rough-legged Hawk (Buteo lagopus) by Scott Kruitbosch

This light morph Rough-legged Hawk (Buteo lagopus) was another fantastic raptor from the Jamestown Christmas Bird Count. I spotted it sitting on this pole before it flew off to a tree and then west. I do not believe any others were seen in our circle yesterday in the constant lake effect snow.

Tough day for a Christmas Bird Count once again as the snow continues to fall…but it makes for pretty scenery in Jamestown, especially with a Snowy Owl in the middle of it! This, an immature female, wasn’t the only one. More awesome raptors and photos and videos to come…
