Fireball in the blue
I took this photo yesterday minutes from RTPI in Jamestown. We are about to hit the peak of fall foliage in Western New York and this weekend’s clear, deep blue, autumn skies made for some magnificent moments. If you have the day off from work or school tomorrow please be sure to find some time for a hike, birding, a run, some biking – anything to disconnect and get outdoors for a while. The Baltimore Checkerspot (Euphydryas phaeton) will not be seen again until next year but it has such bold and seasonal colors, doesn’t it? This butterfly was built for Halloween. Every part of it has some orange and black to show off! This individual was in the gardens at RTPI in July.

Here are a few photos of some of the bluest of blue sky you can see mixed with clouds over RTPI yesterday afternoon, all set above the slowly changing colors. We are seeing some yellow and orange fall foliage starting to pop in the immediate Jamestown area, conquering the remaining green. This week should yield an explosion of vibrant autumn shades. On the first day of fall it is somewhat difficult to see obvious signs of the season…but they can be found. I photographed these seemingly mid-autumn leaves a couple days ago in an area mostly shaded from the sun. In a few weeks colors like these will be bursting in abundance.
