Monarch Migration Report from the Finger Lakes

Last week my husband and I took a trip to the Finger Lakes for a fun adventure to a new area we hadn’t explored much before. While we were there, we happily came across lots of different wildlife species, including several butterflies. While hiking into the fields (hills I should say!) owned by the bed and breakfast we were staying at, we came across about a half dozen or so monarch butterflies nectaring and resting. We also saw a few here and there flying through Watkins Glen State Park and near the International speedway as well, catching updrafts from winds blowing through the gorge...

Fall hawk walk at Trout Brook Valley

On Saturday morning, September 20, I joined the Aspetuck Land Trust on a fall hawk walk with over 40 of their members and volunteers at the gorgeous Trout Brook Valley Preserve in Easton and Weston, Connecticut. This major 1,000+ acre conservation area permits passive recreation in the form of hiking, birding, biking, on-leash dog walking, photography and so forth. It is part of one of the largest contiguous areas of forest left in Fairfield County and is home to rare and important amphibians, plants, birds, mammals, reptiles, pollinators and more. RTPI gardens as rain arrives

I took this photo a few hours ago at RTPI as clouds moved in, the wind picked up and humidity rose. It’s going to be another wet few days for our region as the insects were already hunkering down for a tough stretch again. We wish we could send it to our friends out west.
