This pretty little Palm Warbler (Setophaga palmarum) is one of many that passed through our region in the last couple of months, with most now further south than RTPI. Nevertheless, keep an eye out for this glowing yellow birds as we head into December if you want to brighten up your birding day. The habitual tail pumping is sure to help give it away!

Ruby-throated Hummingbird Portraits

In his continuing portrait series, RTPI Affiliate Sean Graesser couldn’t get enough of this adult male Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris). He said that the bird’s gorget was one of the most stunning he had ever seen in this species and so very vibrant. This is one of the two adult males at Audubon Greenwich this breeding season. Sean has seen a lot of hummingbirds species over the years. Cardinal Portrait

Sean was originally only going to photograph neotropical migrants on the black background for portraits, but that changed once he netted this male Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis). He thought the red and black contrast would look very cool. It was clearly worth it, and Sean said this guy was a really good model with his bright red mohawk.

He says it is one of the birds that really got him into ornithology, and that their relationship with the Golden-winged Warbler and systematic life cycles with this species in habitats fascinated him at an early age.
