Where’s the Snow?!
After above-average to historic snowfall in November it has been a slow late fall and early winter season! Western New York saw some absurd snow totals early in the autumn but it has been tough lately with this latest low pressure system coming over us, the southwest flow dragging temperatures to the 50s, pouring down rain and melting snow. This group of Pine Siskins (Spinus pinus) was filmed extremely close up in HD as they hungrily fed on thistle seed during an unusually cold and snowy day. A few American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis) were mixed in the flock. Both species can be heard softly calling while chowing down.

We have some Snowy Owls sticking around for the long haul, especially near water – even the mostly frozen Lake Erie. This Snowy was at the Chautauqua County/Dunkirk Airport on February 3, 2014 and beautifully photographed by Twan in some light snow. You can even see tiny flakes accumulating around its bright yellow eyes!
