It’s official! Hunting season is over and opening day of the snowmobiling season is upon us. Although we are patiently waiting for more snow to arrive and trails to open, we are busily putting the finishing touches on our “Nature at Your Fingertips” Snowmobile Cell Phone Tour. This year our tour stops will be easy to find thanks to the Snowmobile Clubs of Chautauqua County for including them onto the county snowmobile trail map. With the first official day of winter only about 10 days away, the landscape in Western New York is certainly looking the part thanks to all the recent snow we have received (and are still getting!) from a big Nor’easter that has moved its way up the coast. I took a walk this morning on some of our trails here at RTPI and captured one of my favorite scenes: eastern hemlocks (Tsuga canadensis) dripping with snow. While I was photographing the trees, the winds picked up causing the snow to come swirling down from the branches and needles, making the trail look a bit like a snow-globe....

Now that the harvest season has come to a close, Thanksgiving has passed and all the leaves are finally on the ground, we are getting ready for the snow to fly and for another year of our “Nature at Your Fingertips” cell phone tour to hit the snowmobile trails! Development of this tour was made possible in part through support from the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation.
