Web-footed Salamander (Bolitoglossa medemi)

While we’re on the match stick theme – here’s another non-flashy stunner from last week’s Panama trip. Tropical salamanders also breed through direct development, skip a free-swimming larval stage, and hatch as mini versions of their parents – just like the miniature rain frog I posted earlier this week. This Black-crested Coquette (Lophornis helenae) was not amused by him in the slightest. It was his first time observing this species, let alone capturing it during mist netting to study hummingbirds, and it’s clearly one he loves. He says it is still probably his favorite capture – an amazing bird with such intricate plumage!

Fer-de-Lance

Meet my new friend. I call him ‘fluffy’. He likes to hang out on the same trail that our students used to get to their study plots in Rara Avis Rainforest Preserve. I did not like that. I tried to reason with him. He did not like that. Then I relocated him. He did not like that either – as you can tell he is waiting for my next move… Even though he’s a grumpy Fer-de-Lance, we’re still friends… Twan Leenders RTPI President
