Another Western Rarity

There are scattered very rare western birds continually being spotted across the Northeast. A gorgeous male Painted Bunting in New York City’s Prospect Park made some big news recently, and yesterday Stefan Martin found a Townsend’s Solitaire in the Cos Cob section of Greenwich, Connecticut. Masschusetts, Vermont, Maine and New York have also had Townsend’s Solitaires recently, as you can see on this eBird occurrence map for the species – orange markers are less than 30 days old while others are from October and early November. Common Green Darners still moving

After a scorching day on Tuesday (OK, in relative mid-October temperature terms) with highs into the 80s in Western New York it is a good time to remember there are still some dragonflies migrating through our region and they are active on such cooperative days. Common Green Darners (Anax junius) are on the move and may represent some of the last green you see this year…or maybe not if they are resting or warming in pine trees like this one. What a summer feel!

Connecticut Ornithological Association/Audubon Alliance for Coastal Waterbirds Shorebird Identification Workshop

Here’s Audubon Connecticut’s Patrick Comins talking to a great group of attendees at the Connecticut Ornithological Association shorebird identification workshop this past Saturday in Milford, Connecticut. He and Sean Graesser led them into the field to find some uncommon species including Red Knot and the Western subspecies of Willet. These types of education and conservation events are all part of what we contribute to as a part of the Audubon Alliance for Coastal Waterbirds throughout the northeast.
