Volunteers Beautify RTPI
In late July, a large group of volunteers from the Cummins Inc., Jamestown Engine Plant came to RTPI to make improvements to our building and grounds. This enthusiastic and hardworking group tended our flowerbeds, cleaned up our porch and patio, trimmed back the vegetation along our hiking trails, and weeded our walkways and parking areas. We’d like to express our gratitude for the efforts of this dedicated crew – they certainly left the place looking lovely just in time for our big summer events!

“Elevated Perspective” is a 9-inch bronze rendering of a snowy owl by artist Dale Weiler. RTPI is currently selling raffle tickets for a drawing to be held the first week of September. This sculpture, one of a limited edition of 50, is valued at $1500, and may also be purchased at this price. All proceeds from the sales of “Elevated Perspective” will support RTPI’s Project Wild America Youth Ambassadors Program which engages young people in RTPI’s conservation initiatives in Jamestown’s urban ecosystem – the very place that inspired a young Roger Tory Peterson.

Roger Tory Peterson – inspired by Jamestown’s wild side during his youth – went on to become a world renowned naturalist. For the third consecutive summer, RTPI employed a cohort of local high school and college students as “Project Wild America (PWA) Youth Ambassadors” to follow in Peterson’s footsteps by working alongside our conservation staff monitoring and raising public awareness about Jamestown’s unique and vital natural resources. RTPI teamed up with Audubon Connecticut and the City of Bridgeport, Connecticut to run the 2015 and 2016 WildLife Guards program. We have expanded the very successful initiative to include the City of West Haven at the Sandy Point Important Bird Area in 2017. Both teams of WildLife Guards have been hard at work monitoring nesting birds and conducting stewardship concerning our beaches and ecosystems.
