Preparations are underway for the 5th annual ‘Children in the Stream’ conference. This four day event offers training to adults who are interested in integrating fly fishing into their community, company, organization or school curriculum. The conference consists of a several intensive workshops which use fly fishing as the foundation for investigating science, math, English language arts, visual arts and community outreach. This truly unique interdisciplinary approach is possible through the eclectic expertise of three committed instructors: Dr. Janiel Rey offers her experience in educational administration, literature and social studies; Dr. Mike Jabot shares his extensive knowledge of science and national education standards, and Alberto Rey provides his skills as an Orvis endorsed guide and distinguished professor of visual arts.
The ‘Children in the Stream’ conference provides the instruction, materials and means of acquiring equipment needed to implement the participant’s own customized interdisciplinary curriculum, or to start a youth fly fishing program. This program meets the needs of any school through the integration of the common core learning standards. It also addresses how desired goals can be accomplished within limited budgets and offers significant equipment discounts.
This truly unique conference’s interdisciplinary workshops promote a holistic integration of conservation and community involvement that nurtures future stewards of our natural resources. The ultimate goal is to get youth outdoors and provide them with a fuller understanding and appreciation of their environment.
The 2016 conference will be held at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History in Jamestown, New York from Monday, June 27 – Thursday, June 30, 2016. The cost for the four day conference is $350 which includes instruction in the classroom and in the field and also includes fly rod outfits, fly tying kits and publications for the participants.
