Plastic Pollution has become one of the greatest issues of our time; we’ve all seen the heartbreaking images of seabirds entangled in six pack rings, beached whales with bellies full of debris, and that video of the sea turtle with a plastic straw stuck in its nostril! Feel like you need to get out and DO something to protect our great outdoors and environment? Let’s do something together!
The third week of September marks the first-ever National Nature Cleanup Week! Join some of the Jamestown area’s environmental ambassadors for one or both of the following programs on Friday, September 27th to be a part of the solution.
Community Nature Cleanup with the Roger Tory Peterson Institute
1-3pm at Chadakoin Park, Washington Street, Jamestown
RTPI’s conservation staff will be on site to lead this community clean-up effort, and to teach participants about RTPI’s current research on the impacts of plastic pollution on wildlife. All are welcome to participate – it will be as easy as picking up trash and litter– especially plastic pollution, which is particularly harmful to our environment. Gloves and trash bags will be provided. Meet at the large pavilion by the playground, and bring a friend!
Trash Talk with 5 Gyres Ambassador Kara Bemis
6-8 pm at Samsara Yoga Center, 113 E 2nd Street, Suite 1, Jamestown
Join local 5 Gyres Ambassador and yoga teacher, Kara Bemis, for an informative presentation on local and global plastic pollution which affects all of us – our health, our communities, our future. Plastic is an ever-present material that is in our clothes, surrounds our food, and is causing a huge mess around the world. Things aren’t all doom and gloom however, learn about changes you can make in your life and with your family as well as positive changes that global companies are making to cut back use. Following the hour-long talk will be tea and trifle dessert to be shared zero waste style in a safe community space. This event is being held at downtown, Jamestown yoga studio, Samsara Yoga Center and is donation based. Give what you can, all are welcome, donations will go directly to the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy & Roger Tory Peterson’s Plastic Pollution Research Initiative.
