RTPI will host a ‘Peterson Field Guide Party’ on Wednesday, June 6th from 5:00 – 7:00pm. Peterson field guides have been best sellers since the first edition of A Field Guide to the Birds was created by Roger Tory Peterson in 1934. RTPI’s current exhibit, “Roger Tory Peterson: The Life, The Work, The Legacy,” features stories about Peterson’s life and work, as well as original paintings, artifacts, memorabilia and personal effects from the Peterson Collection. This educational exhibition teaches visitors about Peterson’s dedication and contributions to art, conservation, and preservation of the natural world.
A Field Guide to the Birds is the revolutionary, user-friendly book created by Peterson to make nature accessible to everyone. In 1934, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt took a chance on a young Roger Tory Peterson’s new book, publishing only 2,000 copies. The guide sold out in weeks, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has continued to publish the guides since their inception. There are now more than 50 titles in the Peterson Field Guide series, covering topics such as edible wild plants, wildflowers, mammals, trees, ecology and birds from around the world.
Please join us for a celebration of the book that started it all, A Field Guide to the Birds, in the RTPI courtyard on Wednesday, June 6 from 5:00-7:00pm. Bring your own copy of the guide, socialize with fellow birders, share adventure stories, end enjoy refreshments. We encourage you to wear birdwatching gear, including hats, binoculars, vests, boots, or whatever else you might wear on your own nature or bird walks. The gathering will be a time to share notes, discoveries, big days and special moments from your birding excursions.
This event is free and donations are encouraged. All donations help benefit costs associated with operating RTPI’s exhibit galleries. For more information visit RTPI’s website at www.rtpi.org or call 665-2473. Information is also available on RTPI’s Facebook page.
