Lightning Rainbow
Here’s a thunderstorm from earlier this week with orange, pink, purple, white and blue lightning – it may not be all the colors of the rainbow, but it is still pretty good, huh? Natural nature art is the best. Go enjoy some this weekend.

One reason we did not have severe thunderstorms locally at Stratford Point on Sunday night was because of this severe thunderstorm to the north in the late afternoon. It likely took some of our energy, and it was pushing out air towards us, cooling things down and then blocking the sun for a while. Combined with other factors like drier air working in thanks to the cold front we lost some of our massive instability. This is right before the sun went behind the clouds from the thunderhead. Here is a Throwback Thursday to a little more color! I photographed this Eastern Phoebe (Sayornis phoebe) around a month ago with the fall foliage still just beginning to change. It will be a while before we see that sort of green background again, but these birds could have stayed here for longer than usual with all the insects we still have in the air thanks to continued warmth. It is getting late for warblers in many areas of the Northeast with the exception of a few like the Yellow-rumped Warbler, an uncommon Orange-crowned Warbler, or a late and lingering Palm Warbler (Setophaga palmarum) like this one. Occasionally I have seen them into December in warm and productive feeding areas if there is not too much happening in the way of frigid air or snow. Happy first day of fall! The leaves may still be green but the sun is getting lower and lower, and soon it will be colder and colder. Eventually. I promise. Even if we have such a strong El Niño – the strongest ever recorded? – it will be cold once again! At least we have the beautiful autumn foliage to look forward to and even more birds visiting our yards, both those that will be passing through and others that will be coming to spend the winter with us.
