And here is what you get after you have a cold front move through in the day before a clear evening with now northerly winds…heavy migration! That is a classic Atlantic coastal signature for late August. Go find these birds today if you are not already outside and enjoying them.

This is a radar image from overnight on August 20-21, 2015. As you can see there were a lot of birds in the air moving south from the Mid-Atlantic as far west as this image goes. The cold front and associated heavy rain and thunderstorms that brought the helpful northerly winds was advancing from the eastern Mid-Atlantic slowly into New England. They are really coming now! As we near September the volume and diversity of species heading south will build for us. Get out there this weekend and go find some “fall” migrants.

Welcome to fall migration season, and it is heating up already! These radar grabs from Buffalo and Upton, New York show you some avian migration after the cold front passage a couple days ago. Thursday night into Friday morning saw the arrival of new birds for many areas as flycatchers, vireos, warblers, shorebirds, swallows, blackbirds and more are hitting various staging and roosting areas, following coasts on nonstop trips, or slowly making their way south across our lands. Here’s a radar grab from the overnight period of April 2 into April 3, 2015. As you can see precipitation is moving across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic with heavier waves to the west and lighter showers to the east. Midwestern areas had strong and severe thunderstorms while the Atlantic Coast especially had moderate avian migration occurring – see the diffuse and circular areas of blue centered around radar stations contrasting with the green rain. Here is the Snowy Owl eBird map for August through November as of Monday morning, November 24, 2014. Additional birds seem to have moved into already busy areas in the central flyway, Great Lakes region and the Atlantic Coast. A few edged down the eastern seaboard making their way onto Long Island, into Delaware and Maryland. The last week of November is usually a very good time to see them, even during years with little to no broad or significant irruption of the species. Good luck!
