Eastern Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis)
Recently I heard a little rustling in the leaves around me while I was watching some warblers (what a birder, I know) with a distinctive and familiar sort of sound. Sure enough, this Eastern Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis) was slithering as I had disturbed it while it was sunning on the edge of a pond. I stepped back to let it be and snapped this shot with my 500mm before continuing on. Go see what you can find on the ground, in the air, and in the trees outdoors this weekend! This American Lady was a lovely mid-November sight earlier this week, basking in the sun on a still warmer than average afternoon. You can see what month it is by how low that sun angle is striking the butterfly, casting a long shadow as the days continue to get shorter and darker. Are you still seeing any lepidoptera out there? This American Lady (Vanessa virginiensis) butterfly still looks magnificent here in October, basking in the warm rays from the sun while feeding along with several others. It certainly has a seasonal feel with some Halloween shades, too. What a wonderful sight.

Monarchs are not the only butterflies to see as we enter late October. I photographed this American Lady (Vanessa virginiensis) this week while it was soaking up some sun and staying low on a breezy day. The tiny white spots in the middle of the seasonal orange on the postmedian parts of the forewing help to identify it as American instead of Painted.
