Swamp Rose (Rosa palustris)

Swamp rose (Rosa palustris) was amongst the many plants that were added to the botanical list during the SUNY College Lodge BioBlitz that took place this past weekend. This rose species is a native perennial shrub that doesn’t mind the sun or getting its feet wet. It frequents swamp and marsh edges and was appropriately found along the large swamp on the property in a bright, sunny spot. We were happy to find this native rose as the non-native multiflora rose has been taking over in many places. Spotted Salamander and Eastern Newt

Here are a couple of friends we met and Sean photographed during the BioBlitz yesterday – a Spotted Salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) and an Eastern Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens). These neighbors could very well be in your backyard right now if you’re in the Eastern U.S. As Sean noted the rain may not have helped our overall total of life (bleh for bugs and birds!) but it did provide assistance for finding amphibians.

RTPI BioBlitz of SUNY College Lodge complete

At the end of 24 hours we have tallied 510+ species at the SUNY College Lodge BioBlitz with many yet to be identified and added to the count. We hope to be able to crack at least 600 despite a rainy last 10 or so hours. That’s a lot of life for 200 acres! Thank you to all the experts who came from near and far to help us out and the visitors who joined us on walks and enjoyed what we were collecting. We’ll share photos and cool species over the coming days.
