Curu Wildlife Refuge

Curu Wildlife Refuge is home to endless amounts of trees fruiting with coconuts, mangrove estuaries, and rows upon rows of mango trees that have long since forgotten how to fruit. Amongst one of these patches of mango trees is our other banding station, and tucked along the trails that bisect a unique edge habitat of White Mangrove trees are our nets. Black-headed Trogon (Trogon melanocephalus)

This Black-headed Trogon (Trogon melanocephalus) has this strangely subtle look to me despite sporting a bright light blue eye ring, violet and indigo shades on the back and sparkling yellow undersides. It is a different sort of tux for New Year’s Eve as photographed recently in Costa Rica by RTPI Affiliate Sean Graesser.

Nicoya Peninsula Avian Research Station seeking volunteers

The Nicoya Peninsula Avian Research Station is seeking volunteer banding technicians for a winter project in northwestern Costa Rica. The research is aimed toward the study of molt and aging criteria in Costa Rican resident bird species, and collection of data from wintering Nearctic-Neotropical migrants for the Institute for Bird Populations’ MoSI Program. Winter participants will aid in the operation of four bird banding sites on the Nicoya Peninsula.
