Any time we see snowfall from mid-March on, we might notice an increase in the number and species diversity of birds at our backyard feeders. Those who pay close attention might also have the opportunity to view more elusive birds – those that would otherwise just be passing through or returning to the area relatively unnoticed – that are driven out of their preferred habitats by the extreme conditions in search of food. Another January day, another impressive Stratford Point sunset. These gorgeous shades are from Thursday evening. This time we had a lot more blue and pink in the air on the clouds with the glowing orange and reds really confined to the distant horizon. This was last night’s magnificent sunset at Stratford Point in Stratford, Connecticut looking towards the lighthouse and then our office building. We added some scenery in the form of ~12 inches of windblown snow from the blizzard last weekend. There are open areas and drifts to a few feet deep, and several Horned Larks were flying around taking advantage of the bare ground while these were taken. Here’s the snowfall on tap for Roger Tory Peterson’s old Nutmeg home from midday tomorrow through Wednesday morning along with winds gusting to near hurricane force. In all it means a blizzard warning is in effect for this entire region. Birds are extremely resilient and resourceful but some of them may want to be winging it a bit further south later this week once it clears. They will also head towards the coast and end up in many places where our Audubon Alliance for Coastal Waterbirds crew works all spring and summer. Be safe!
