Indigo Bunting (Passerina cyanea)

This Indigo Bunting (Passerina cyanea) ((and what a very appropriate Latin species name that is)) may be a first-spring male coming into his full blue splendor. He was belting out his song in this forest cut, perching on tree branches on the edge of the woodland and finding a shrub or two to allow me a better look while snagging a snack. They are persistent songsters with the tune carrying on all morning and likely through the afternoon. If you are truly lucky – like Twan – then you regularly get to see these birds in your backyard at your thistle feeder. What a striking contrast...

Blue Jay

This Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata) was in the shade on a sunny April day, nevertheless showing off blue hues against a blue sky and flying around with its mate. It helps to remind us how much is truly going on around us in nature and the atmosphere, all of it impacting the life of thousands upon thousands of species that we must work to keep protecting…including...

Indigo Bunting

Here are some more shots of Twan’s backyard Indigo Bunting. That blazing and regal blue looks almost otherworldly when you are at home and suddenly notice it outside of your window. It even decided to have a snack at his feeders…what a treat for him! As you can see he also had an American Goldfinch friend, and this Gray Catbird hopped up for some suet. I am beyond jealous…have you had such a cooperative Indigo Bunting? Now all he needs is a Painted Bunting to complete his set. Our homes, feeders and yards are a “Wild America” all their own each spring! Scott...
