Common Goldeneye
The drake Common Goldeneye (Bucephala clangula) on the right was swimming with several others of the species in this extremely cropped shot. They were a little too far for my taste, but I was fortunately able to snap a photo at the right second as he was about to devour what looks like a delicious mussel. This drake Common Goldeneye (Bucephala clangula) is on the move, ready to head back to the north for the spring. The ice and snow are going to slowly be devoured by the sun and (eventually) warming temperatures as water begins to open once again. It does not feel like it but very quietly…migration has begun!

Our good friend, birder and veterinarian, Dr. William Seleen found a remarkable and fascinating bird during our local Jamestown, New York Christmas Bird Count on December 14. Take a look at the photo below and see if you can find the duck that is out of place in this group on Chautauqua Lake. Yep, the bird in the middle at the back is the one. Do you know the identity of the other waterfowl? Those are Common Goldeneye (Bucephala clangula) and this flock held approximately 75 individuals.
