American Goldfinch

This American Goldfinch (Carduelis tristis) was enamored with feeding on some Mexican sunflower (Tithonia Rotundifolia) as it is starting to bloom at this point in the summer. Goldfinches are rather late nesting birds for a species that can be with us year-round, or at least very early in the spring, so that they can feed more easily on some of these flowering plants. They wait for the seed season to come for their growing young as they stick to a nearly entirely vegetarian diet. This is also why they are so easy to find in your yard or garden.
