Caspian Tern Courtship

Here is a terrific capture of Caspian Terns engaged in courtship feeding, as taken at Wright Park Beach in Dunkirk, New York by our friend Gale VerHague. Please join us tomorrow, Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at RTPI at 7:00PM to hear Gale while she displays more of her tremendous photography – “Chasing Feathers: Birding with a Camera in Western New York and Beyond”. Gale will be showing a series of shots of this very event which is what sparked her birding blog in 2009. This is a free and public evening at RTPI, and we hope to see you then!

Caspian Tern (Hydroprogne caspia)

This Caspian Tern (Hydroprogne caspia) was photographed in Florida by Twan but it could end up being one of the birds on Lake Erie soon enough. The massive tern, with its huge red bill and powerful wings, may make its way north to the shores of Chautauqua County in a month! Until then it will have to work on filling in that black cap.

Caspian Tern (Hydroprogne caspia) by Scott Kruitbosch

It’s difficult to tell in this photo but Caspian Terns really are enormous birds. At least 9 were feeding in Lake Erie off Dunkirk yesterday in the increasingly blue sky. After another frost last night in Western NY (ugh!) spring temperatures and sunshine will come fast this week.
