RTPI Receives Cattaraugus County Arts Council Grant

The Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History recently received a $2,000 grant from the Cattaraugus County Arts Council (CCAC) to help with costs for our three summer exhibitions, which we collectively called Natural Connections. The photo is of RTPI’s Development Associate Linda Pierce and Communications & Public Programs Coordinator Jane Johnson with Senator Cathy Young and our award certificate. Goodbye to green and growing season

We have already had multiple frosts and freezes in the Chautauqua-Allegheny region. This weekend may bring the first…I’ll say flakes and avoid using the s-word for now! Last June we discovered a Delta-spotted Spiketail (Cordulegaster diastatops) along a busy road that turned out to be a first Chautauqua County record. This past weekend I discovered an individual of a new population at a second location in CHQ that Twan photographed here. We are hoping to record other spiketail species this spring and summer at a few more sites in the Chautauqua-Allegheny region.

Dragonflies and damselflies weekend

Twan and I spent the weekend searching for and netting various dragonflies and damselflies across Chautauqua County in a “divide and conquer” sweep of as many sites as we could hit. The number of natural areas we have to search is overwhelming. While surveying we also recorded birds, butterflies, reptiles, amphibians…you get the picture. It’s a sensory overload! Last year we added several new odonate county records in Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Warren and more. This included the Delta-spotted Spiketail mere minutes from RTPI. I was able to find another population of the...
