WildLife Guard Crew Leader Summer Job Openings
In 2014, Bridgeport, Connecticut’s Pleasure Beach reopened to the public after nearly 20 years. The barrier beach is home to the federally threatened Piping Plover and state threatened Least Tern, among other imperiled waterbirds, as well as four state endangered plant species. To ensure that these birds have the opportunity to nest successfully and to maintain the barrier beach, a rare habitat in Connecticut, Audubon Connecticut created the WildLife Guards Program. I took these Sanderling photos earlier this season before the Atlantic coast of New England was battered by repeated nor’easters and major winter storms, leaving snow and ice coating much of the shoreline. Watching them feed in the tide, darting back and forth with the water and running through the sand, is such a pleasant and relaxing diversion on a bright winter day. If you are participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count later this week be mindful of finding rarities like this Eurasian Wigeon in Stratford, Connecticut. You can find the species among American Wigeon most often, like this alert drake looking at me and the camera resting with some of its new American friends. Even when they tuck their heads in to sleep you can find that dark reddish/orange head with the buff-colored crown floating on the water and standing out from the green surrounding it. Here’s the snowfall on tap for Roger Tory Peterson’s old Nutmeg home from midday tomorrow through Wednesday morning along with winds gusting to near hurricane force. In all it means a blizzard warning is in effect for this entire region. Birds are extremely resilient and resourceful but some of them may want to be winging it a bit further south later this week once it clears. They will also head towards the coast and end up in many places where our Audubon Alliance for Coastal Waterbirds crew works all spring and summer. Be safe!

Born from 51 pairs across Connecticut these young birds shattered the old state record of 101 fledged young in 2008.
