Long-tailed Duck (Clangula hyemalis) by Scott Kruitbosch

There’s a reason for the name Long-tailed Duck (Clangula hyemalis), one that does not need any explanation. This was one of two individuals at Dunkirk Harbor (on Lake Erie, NY) today along with thousands of other waterfowl of a couple dozen species. Bald Eagles perched on the ice and flying overhead keep them all very attentive. It’s a spectacle.

We have some Snowy Owls sticking around for the long haul, especially near water – even the mostly frozen Lake Erie. This Snowy was at the Chautauqua County/Dunkirk Airport on February 3, 2014 and beautifully photographed by Twan in some light snow. You can even see tiny flakes accumulating around its bright yellow eyes!

This melanistic Eastern Gray Squirrel that Twan recently photographed in Dunkirk, NY seemed to me to be the perfect scene for the upcoming week with a little bit of snow in a very cold looking world.
