Dot-tailed Whiteface (Leucorrhinia intacta)
Dragonflies are emerging in big numbers this warm weekend! I found many teneral Dot-tailed Whitefaces (Leucorrhinia intacta) literally popping up from the grass yesterday as Eastern Kingbirds rapidly pursued these still slow moving insects, skillfully using me to flush their prey.

I’ve spent upwards of 60 hours in the field in the last week with most of my time spent surveying for birds (besides butterflies, dragonflies/damselflies, amphibians, reptiles, plants, you know..basically everything!) and here are more of the photos I’ve taken of a bunch of species. Aerial insectivores, birds that feed on insects primarily by capturing them in flight, have been migrating south rapidly. The very vocal Common Nighthawks that nest in downtown Jamestown have departed. Species like this Eastern Kingbird have been recorded in high numbers lately as they move through.
