Summer Sunset

This has been one nonstop summer for the Roger Tory Peterson Institute’s art, education and conservation work in Connecticut. It feels like just the other day I was enjoying the peak of spring bird migration, and here we are entering mid-August. In reality we have been going full speed ahead since mid-March and the beginning of the Audubon Alliance for Coastal Waterbirds season which continues even now with birds still yet to fledge in the next couple of weeks. Moon Craters

I took this shot of the Moon early Saturday night. It is not quite full yet, but with its current phase and a nice spot low on the horizon it provided a great view of many of its notable and named craters. I think it’s awesome that a camera in a backyard can take a photo of the Moon and show how rugged its surface is. As Galileo first discovered it is certainly not a perfect sphere. Gnarly Sunset

I went outside to try to photograph some mammatus clouds a few days ago, with the evening sky revealing those dense pockets of descending cool air after a volatile day after severe thunderstorms and heavy rain showers. It did not go very well! The mammatus clouds to my east were a bit too spread out in distribution and too diffuse, not catching the light correctly for some reason. However, the light was funky to say the very least, with everything on the ground having these odd tones as the sun went below the horizon.
