Black-and-white Warblers

Here we have both the male and female Black-and-white Warblers (Mniotilta varia), friendly birds who are coming back to our backyards as we speak. The male is darker and more heavily streaked with more black than white. A few are being seen here and there in the Northeast, though our migratory conditions for all avian species have been less than helpful thus far in late April. Continuing northerly winds or unsettled conditions should plague us for most of the week, with a few calm moments or westerly winds helping move birds at times. Red Fox Wrestling!

Would you be interested in watching young Red Fox kits wrestling? Do you want to see adorable pups in battle training? How do you like fluffy little cubs biting and attempting to “kill” one another? If so, you’re in luck! As in previous Red Fox postings I shot these through a window from afar for the safety of the competitors as well as the photographer (and this would never happen if they could see me!)… Everything these little ones do is precisely what a litter of your pet puppies would do, and they all seem to have their distinct personalities. Red Fox Pup Exploring

It did not take long for the very young Red Fox pups from this family to start exploring their surroundings a bit more. I took these photos in the early morning through glass once again while the environment was still and peaceful, allowing it to wander a bit. Red-capped Manakins (Ceratopipra mentalis)

Here we have the Red-capped Manakin (Ceratopipra mentalis), a species that commonly performs outlandish competitive dancing displays alongside other males. These areas, leks, are typically on branches to really feel the “music” and get their dance moves going. According to Sean Red-capped Manakin’s final move is a slide back reminiscent of Michael Jackson’s moonwalk. Violet-crowned Woodnymph (Thalurania colombica)

Here we have both the male and female Violet-crowned Woodnymph (Thalurania colombica) hummingbirds, with females visiting their tropical feeders much more often than males according to Sean. Have you welcomed your Ruby-throated Hummingbirds back yet this spring?!
