Flooding in the Area

As the recent snows that coated the county have rapidly melted due to above average temperatures, the area’s streams and rivers have been on the rise. As you can see, Cassadaga Creek is well above its banks at the Levant Boat Launch near Falconer, making a watery scene. Although it was warm enough to be outside and have a picnic, I can’t say that you could necessarily enjoy a packed lunch on the stream side! Elyse Henshaw Conservation Technician

More thunderstorms and flooding

I would say “another day, another thunderstorm” but we get multiple events in a matter of hours lately. We’re well past water capacity in a number of areas in the Chautauqua-Allegheny region as flood advisories and flash flood warnings are already posted in places getting even more heavy rain now. Lightning is flashing intermittently as I type this. Stubborn and “stuck” patterns are becoming more and more common thanks to climate change and our jet stream. Severe thunderstorm in Jamestown

In the 5:0o PM hour today, August 2, 2014, we had a very severe thunderstorm in the Jamestown area despite it not being warned as one. Apart from nonstop cloud to ground lightning strikes and torrential rain dumping inches in a short period it had severe hail at least quarter-sized and perhaps nearing golf ball in some locations with vehicle damage reported, downed trees and lines, flooding and a host of other problems.
