October Blue Sky

There is something about looking up at the bright blue sky in October against some of our foliage, especially on those clear and crisp days with a touch of cirrus working in after a cold front. The air is clean and dry, so inviting after a hot and sticky summer, making us think about those chilly and snowy winter days to come. We may see the first few flakes of the season tomorrow in Chautauqua County!

Yellow-rumped Warbler

Here are a couple more stunning Yellow-rumped Warbler photos while they are looking so fantastic in their spring shades – and right before all the leaves pop out. Yellow-rumped Warbler

Here it is, the most abundant warbler you will likely see this year – the Yellow-rumped Warbler. In this case the bird was not showing off where it got that name, and instead it fluffed up and shook off for a moment while still watching for prey. There were plenty of flying (and biting!) insects already in the air here in late April, and it along with dozens of others had their fill flitting through the forest canopy. You can also see the leaves beginning to emerge. In a couple of weeks there will be a lot of green across the landscape and views like this one will already be covered...

Foliage Flight

Goodbye to the fall foliage, and goodbye to those dots – they are Turkey Vultures heading to the south for the winter. Some will try to hang on in the Chautauqua-Allegheny region, but once the snow starts coming and life goes into hiding it becomes very difficult for these scavengers to find food, and the competition skyrockets. We will see them drifting up along Lake Erie again next spring.
