Green Frog

This Green Frog recently took a hop my way on a wonderfully sunny day. Despite those enjoyable conditions I think it and we all would and should keep rooting for more rain. A moderate to severe drought continues to plague much of the Northeast region including western New York, and days like yesterday are very welcome! Wood Frog (Lithobates sylvaticus)

This Wood Frog (Lithobates sylvaticus) surprised me yesterday while I was walking with my dog Zach. At first I thought a leaf had blown across the grass under his furry stomach, but I said…wait, no way, that moved way too directly, too low, and too quick. After about 20 seconds of looking at the ground, sure enough, there it was. I took a few photos of it in between its hops back to the woods. Cocobolo Nature Reserve Monitoring

I’m leaving Saturday for another round of research and monitoring on the endangered Limosa Harlequin Frog (Atelopus limosus) monitoring with Alex Shepack, Michael Roy, and Abel Batista in the wonderful Cocobolo Nature Reserve in Eastern Panama. We’re looking for more clues on the enigmatic behavior of the deadly amphibian chytrid fungus in the area and the mechanisms that allow some local frogs to survive.
