Snowy Owl eBird Map 11/24/14

Here is the Snowy Owl eBird map for August through November as of Monday morning, November 24, 2014. Additional birds seem to have moved into already busy areas in the central flyway, Great Lakes region and the Atlantic Coast. A few edged down the eastern seaboard making their way onto Long Island, into Delaware and Maryland. The last week of November is usually a very good time to see them, even during years with little to no broad or significant irruption of the species. Good luck!

Cold front coming

Cold front coming

Normally I would love to see this low and cold front coming through in this manner in mid-September, as modeled on today’s 18z GFS for Thursday morning at 9AM, but the high subsequently moves into the Great Plains and the setup will not be as optimal as I would like for hawk migration. For the Northeast sites to really rock it should be centered over the Great Lakes, controlling winds at all levels and keeping them out of the northwest. We’ll see…Friday could still be interesting. But, so far this year, the winds have not cooperated. Perhaps it will be a huge second half of...

Dredging in Lake Erie

This past weekend while out at Barcelona Harbor, I witnessed some of the ongoing work being done to deepen the waterways within Lake Erie for the purposes of maintaining navigation channels for federal, commercial and recreational boats. Through the past few years, the channels have filled in significantly with sediments and debris from the increasingly intensifying storms, such as Superstorm Sandy, and the rate of erosion taking place within the area’s streams feeding into the great lake. With the growing risk of shoreline flooding and safety issues arising for boaters, it was...

The Seen and Unseen Effects of Climate Change

“That’s western New York weather for you,” is a phrase I’ve often heard growing up in this area, as our weather seems to change pretty frequently throughout any given week and sometimes even within a day. Being accustomed to how the weather in this part of the state changes by the hour, I’ve gotten into the habit of checking the weather in the morning before I head out the door. The other morning as I was taking a look at accuweather, my typical weather go-to site, I saw an article about Alaska’s shrinking glaciers. Having taken a trip to Alaska within the...

April speaker – Luke Tiller

RTPI is thrilled to welcome our friend Luke Tiller as our April speaker on Monday, April 14 at 7:00 p.m. The Great Lakes are an incredible spot for bird migration of all kinds but perhaps particularly notably for raptors. Join hawkwatching expert Luke Tiller to hear about one of the best raptor migration sites, that happens to just be a stones throw away from Jamestown in Western New York. Luke will talk about among other things: Braddock Bay, the history of hawkwatching, how to get the best out of the hawkwatching experience and about some of the pitfalls of trying to identify a bird in...
