Angry Groundhog

This is one angry looking Groundhog, Whistlepig, or Woodchuck (Marmota monax)…you can use any name, but this rodent was not happy with me. It was not my fault, I swear! Do you know what the problem is here? I was standing on a porch, and under this porch happens to be a burrow with young groundhogs. Every time I have seen one of them they scurry away as fast as can be in a non-stealthy manner back into the closest entrance to the burrow. Groundhog Day?

Groundhog Day? Not quite! The grass is a little too green for that…but this woodchuck was on guard while having an evening meal and keeping a watchful eye over the yard. It seems to be casting a little bit of a shadow, even without all those TV lights surrounding it. Does that mean we will have six more weeks of summer?

Mock vs. Chuck

This Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) was not taking too kindly to this young Woodchuck, Groundhog, or any other common name you’d like (Marmota monax) as it was only trying to nibble on a few delicious green snacks on a cloudy morning. You can see their relative sizes are not that far off, with this young chuck wondering why mom and dad did not explain the joy of birds before. Mockingbirds can be vicious pests if you are anywhere near they’re nest doing…well, anything, like existing in their space! I can recall being attacked and whacked by them as a small child...

Early Spring or More Snow to Come?

Happy Groundhog Day all! While the groundhogs are sending mixed messages, with New York’s Stanton Island Chuck not seeing his shadow and Punxsutawny Phil seeing his shadow, it looks as though winter is here to stay here in Western New York. Much of the region received several inches of snow between yesterday and today and more is in the forecast for later this week. So what do you think? Will this wintery scene be our view for the next six weeks, or is an early spring just around the corner?
