The Search for HWA Begins

Join us this Friday afternoon for our first hemlock woolly adelgid survey of the season! As a part of the Hemlock Conservation of the High Allegheny Plateau Project, led by the U.S. Forest Service and The Nature Conservancy, RTPI and JCC adopted South Valley State Forest to survey and contribute information to these agencies as well as the Department of Environmental Conservation. Forest Pest Task Force

Please join us at RTPI on Wednesday, September 13th from 1:00-3:00PM for the fall Chautauqua County Forest Pest Task Force meeting! The task force will discuss ongoing forest pest issues such as the spread of Emerald Ash Borer, Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, Oak Wilt and other new diseases or pests impacting our local, regional and state forests. Huge Thank You!

During NY Invasive Species Awareness Week RTPI hosted a number of events raising awareness about local invasive species and conducted several survey efforts with their Project Wild America Youth Ambassadors. One of the events, Water Chestnut Chasers, resulted in the PWA crew and RTPI staff kayaking the outlet of Chautauqua Lake in search of this pesky plant. Survey efforts came up negative (whew!), but a very positive experience exploring the wild shorelines of the Chadakoin River was had. Off to a Great Start

They say time flies when you’re having fun, right? Well I can say time has certainly been flying here at RTPI as the summer field season is now underway. So far, I’ve spent much of my time working with our Project Wild America Youth Ambassadors in the city of Jamestown as we continue the work we started last year. We are conducting more in depth studies of this urban ecosystem, and so far the PWA Youth Ambassadors have been diving in, quite literally, eagerly learning more.
