Dashing Through the Snow?

Happy New Year! We are hoping for more and more snow in the Chautauqua-Allegheny region so that the thousands upon thousands of visitors to Chautauqua County can enjoy our winter trails cell phone tour on snowmobile, skis, hiking or walking, birding and photographing and more. Let’s hope January lives up to its standards and climatology so that our backyards look more like this photo from last winter. ‘Tis the season!

American Coot (Fulica americana) in the rain

This American Coot (Fulica americana) was photographed earlier this week, not trying to dodge any of the drops while displaying its waterproof winter coat. We have had to wear our waterproof jackets frequently lately as much of the Northeast has been targeted with a lot more rain than snow. We currently have a couple of unseasonably warm and sunny days on tap which at least provide a great excuse to get outdoors to enjoy the winter wonders of nature with family and friends. Wood Duck Pair

If you live in or near wet woodlands, or even in a neighborhood with some forest habitat and a small pond, perhaps you will be fortunate enough to have Wood Ducks frequenting the area. During the winter months it is a good time to consider what you want to do with your yard and home to help birds. Determining what nest boxes you can erect in a few months for the spring arrivals and local breeding species can be a great activity on a quiet day. Yes, it is true – you may be fascinated to learn that in the winter season it is often both cold and snowy.
