Pink Wildflower

This is a very tiny and so very vibrant pink wildflower! I am not a botanist and did not know the species was, but I believe it to be Deptford Pink or Grass Pink (Dianthus armeria). The wildflower is native to Europe, and though nonnative in our soil it does well without becoming invasive or dominating any landscape. Halloween butterfly

The Baltimore Checkerspot (Euphydryas phaeton) will not be seen again until next year but it has such bold and seasonal colors, doesn’t it? This butterfly was built for Halloween. Every part of it has some orange and black to show off! This individual was in the gardens at RTPI in July.

Northeast percent of normal precipitation May-July 2014

As more heavy rain and thunderstorms are impacting us locally today here’s the Northeast Regional Climate Center map for percent of normal precipitation in the Northeast from May 1 through July 31. Yep, this doesn’t include the inches and inches of rain falling in our region in the last few days! Suffice it to say the Great Lakes have seen enough water for now…and the rest of the month…and maybe until around Halloween…

Hurricane Arthur

There always seems to be something strange going on with the weather in the Northeast United States and this Independence Day weekend was no exception. I cannot recall a time where we were even talking about tropical cyclones in early July but sure enough, Hurricane Arthur decided to make a close pass right off the Mid-Atlantic and New England coasts on the Fourth after ramming through the Carolinas.
