White Slant-line

The White Slant-line (Tetracis cachexiata) moth seen here was blending in so well against this house. It seemed to be more attracted to the typical porch lights than the ultraviolet light that was set up, but who knows what brought it in. I can see why Roger Tory Peterson was so engaged in mothing as a child – it really is fascinating to see what shows up, and there are so many species that you can find so easily with little effort. Locust Twig Borer

Locust Twig Borer

Here we have what looks to be the Locust Twig Borer (Ecdytolopha insiticiana), named as its larvae feed on the Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia). They cause damage as they bore into the stems of the well known tree. Considering there are some Black Locust nearby this was another not too surprising sighting on a spring night.

Tulip Tree Flower

I noticed this Tulip Tree flower on the ground only because it was lit by one ray of sunlight in the shade. The leaves have popped here, there and everywhere! We are really getting that late spring feel to the weather this week. If you can let that lawn grow up a little this summer please do. It helps all of our pollinators, means less pollution, saves your time, money and energy, and can even provide a better habitat for some of our birds. Goodbye March Sky

As we say goodbye to March and its cold, dark and dreary skies we turn a hopeful eye to April when perhaps – after more chilly weather and possibly snow – we will see a return to normal climate conditions and much more life outdoors.
