RTPI Signs
If you visit us at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History to see Art and the Animal please be on the lookout for these signs while walking in. You should also look for them all over our, and Roger Tory Peterson’s, hometown of Jamestown, New York for our cell phone tour called, “In the Footsteps of Roger Tory Peterson.” This mobile tour has fifteen stops scattered around the Jamestown area, highlighting Roger’s childhood and the locations where he was first inspired by nature, portraying how he began a lifelong career devoted to art, conservation and education. It is...

We naturalists sure do love nature, including our flowers and all sorts of bright colors. I thought it was funny that RTPI Conservation Technician Elyse Henshaw and I were both standing by this arrangement before the Art and the Animal exhibition opening recently, cameras in hand, and also taking shots of the tiny flowers on some of the tables. I would not have had the opportunity to take a photo of this sign-in table by the time I arrived because the entire room was filled to capacity with so many tremendous friends of a wonderful man. It...

Here we have what looks to be a Close-banded Yellowhorn (Colocasia propinquilinea) moth, one of a few dozen species that I enjoyed seeing while mothing this weekend. I will be sharing moths all spring, summer, and fall, in part to honor one of young Roger Tory Peterson’s hobbies, and something that helped foster his passion for the natural world in our Wild America. This pastime is as easy as turning on an outside light at night and seeing what shows up. The very difficult part comes in identifying these (mostly) nocturnal creatures! I do have the superb Peterson Field Guide to Moths...
