See a Saw-whet?
Maybe we will start to feel a little more seasonable with some cooler air working in now. The Northern Saw-whet Owls (Aegolius acadicus) will keep on working in as well, moving south and giving you that real autumn feel if you are lucky enough to hear or spot one like in this great photo by RTPI Affiliate Sean Graesser.

Can anyone say cute?! If you’re a mouse or small songbird, you likely wouldn’t be saying that within ear shot of this owl! The Northern Saw-whet Owl (Aegolius acadicus) is a pint sized predator that is actually quite ferocious when it comes to hunting. Thanks to their nocturnal nature and silent strike, prey don’t even hear them coming. Interestingly, once these owls catch a meal, they often don’t eat it all at once. If you are anywhere in New England or the Mid-Atlantic it is a great time to be watching for Northern Saw-whet Owls (Aegolius acadicus). You will not likely find them like this as it is a photo RTPI Affiliate Sean Graesser took while netting and banding more of the species on the move through New Jersey. Nevertheless, you cannot win if you do not play! Take a look at any dense vegetation you come across as they are often near our eye level. This tiny bundle of Halloween fear and dread was photographed by RTPI Affiliate Sean Graesser as he had a very successful night of netting and banding Northern Saw-whet Owls (Aegolius acadicus) earlier this week in New Jersey. They are definitely on the move well now in the Mid-Atlantic.

What was going to be a quiet night of just trying to band migrant Northern Saw-whet Owls (Aegolius acadicus) turned into so much more. Tyler Christensen and I cut our mist nest lane configuration earlier in the day and returned around 6:45 to get things started. We use an audio lure to try and bring migrating Saw-whet Owls to the nets, so we started that and left the area. We decided to wait till 7:50 to check the nets again.
