Leaf Lovers
Welcome to October! It is a wonderful month of the year for the leaf lovers among us, and one of the crew is certainly the Ovenbird (Seiurus aurocapilla). These little warblers prefer to stay on the forest floor among the dead leaves that have now started to fall. This little Ovenbird (Seiurus aurocapilla) was a great little sighting a couple of weeks ago even though it was doing a typical Ovenbird thing – skulking around in the thick brush and staying out of sight. I was able to snap off this one photo before it instantly moved, and it would have been a wonderful shot if not for the dark conditions and the fact you can see the gray chain link fence that I was shooting through from afar. This was a migratory hotspot and not the middle of the woods! That was probably the best pose that any of the species has given me when not belting out a song....

Oh, you Ovenbirds…I have been trying to get a decent, clear, on a branch or in the open photo of an Ovenbird (Seiurus aurocapilla) for the last two weeks with very little success. The best opportunity I had was a cold, foggy morning with heavy rain falling when multiple birds were walking only several feet in front of me, but that did not end well. These shots were taken a few days ago with a bird skulking about the brush under shrubs and trees along a trail. Good luck to you all with your birding this weekend. Those Ovenbirds (Seiurus aurocapilla) will soon be crafting their ovens on the forest floor, filling them with eggs and keeping a very low profile when near this home. Apart from all of the locals Sean has been meeting some familiar friends in Costa Rica. His new Ovenbird (Seiurus aurocapillus) pal could have been nesting in your backyard this summer but it’s spending the winter deep in Central America. Banding and research of many U.S. and Canadian breeding species on their winter grounds is vital to their overall conservation as they spend about half of their lives away from our borders. If we care about protecting them we must have the full picture and conduct international efforts in doing so.
