Naturalists Love Flowers

We naturalists sure do love nature, including our flowers and all sorts of bright colors. I thought it was funny that RTPI Conservation Technician Elyse Henshaw and I were both standing by this arrangement before the Art and the Animal exhibition opening recently, cameras in hand, and also taking shots of the tiny flowers on some of the tables. White Slant-line

The White Slant-line (Tetracis cachexiata) moth seen here was blending in so well against this house. It seemed to be more attracted to the typical porch lights than the ultraviolet light that was set up, but who knows what brought it in. I can see why Roger Tory Peterson was so engaged in mothing as a child – it really is fascinating to see what shows up, and there are so many species that you can find so easily with little effort. Locust Twig Borer

Here we have what looks to be the Locust Twig Borer (Ecdytolopha insiticiana), named as its larvae feed on the Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia). They cause damage as they bore into the stems of the well known tree. Considering there are some Black Locust nearby this was another not too surprising sighting on a spring night.

Pale Beauty (Campaea perlata)

This looks to be a Pale Beauty (Campaea perlata), an apt name for this moth that “knocked” on my door and glistened under the porch lights and the flash.
