Migrant bird sightings and captures finally started to pick up for RTPI Affiliate Sean Graesser and the crew in Costa Rica just after Christmas. We should be seeing some more beautiful photos with more exciting news coming from the tropical rainforest soon…and that is perfect timing as we are finally feeling some real winter here this January. Avian conservation is a year-round affair for us across our hemisphere.

Rufous-eyed Streamside Tree Frog (Duellmanohyla rufioculis)

Here is a Rufous-eyed Streamside Tree Frog (Duellmanohyla rufioculis) from Costa Rica, posing ridiculously wonderfully as so many tropical amphibians do for Twan. This photo reminded me that last week I actually heard some Spring Peepers going out there in the wet woodlands on one of the very warm days. Autumn has been about as warm as it can get for us. Hummingbird Nestlings

Things don’t get much more amazing than baby hummingbirds. The adults are already pushing the limits of morphology, physiology and awesomeness, but when you put all that in a marble-sized package – prepare to have your mind blown! These are likely Violet-headed Hummingbirds as seen in Panama. Supporting RTPI today and every day helps to ensure our Art, Education and Conservation all the way from our headquarters in Jamestown, New York to a tree branch in the rainforest on the other side of the world. Strawberry Poison-dart Frog (Oophaga pumilio)

Sean says there’s nothing like walking through the tropics at night with little red vibrant jumping beans darting in and out of the trail path. The Strawberry Poison-dart Frog (Oophaga pumilio) is one the most well known symbols of the tropics, and seeing them instantly makes you think of tropical nights with the sights and sounds that go along with it. Photographed by RTPI Affiliate Sean Graesser for the Meet Your Neighbours global biodiversity project in Costa Rica while on assignment for the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History.
