Red Knots Federally Threatened
Last week the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service announced that the rufa subspecies of Red Knot was officially added to the United States Endangered Species Act, designated as “threatened”. They are an uncommon shorebird in the state but there can be pockets of them found, especially in the fall. Milhouse Monday? He may have said “Nice doggy” but if he had his glasses he’d have said Horseshoe Crab! The Simpsons did a great job illustrating this prehistoric creature, one of the most unique and important coastal species we have. This is especially true around Delaware Bay where the eggs of the living fossil provide food for Red Knots, sustaining the shorebird’s global population.

Here’s Audubon Connecticut’s Patrick Comins talking to a great group of attendees at the Connecticut Ornithological Association shorebird identification workshop this past Saturday in Milford, Connecticut. He and Sean Graesser led them into the field to find some uncommon species including Red Knot and the Western subspecies of Willet. These types of education and conservation events are all part of what we contribute to as a part of the Audubon Alliance for Coastal Waterbirds throughout the northeast.
