Drake Northern Shoveler

I finally had the chance to properly photograph a beautiful drake Northern Shoveler (Anas clypeata) late last winter. This bird was on the way north for the breeding season, stopping off at a warm spot along a river marsh. I post him now because earlier this week a colleague of mine saw a small flock of Northern Shovelers flying by on the way south already! It is hard to believe we are that deep into the season, but the winter waterfowl are on the way. What is your favorite species of duck? Any you can’t wait to add to your life list? Returning to the Chadakoin

Passing through the center of Jamestown, the Chadakoin river has always been the focal point of the city. I’ll be writing about all of these things shortly, so please stay tuned! Spring is upon us now, and we are looking ahead and setting goals for our summer...

Underwater Neighbours

One aspect of the dazzling tropical biodiversity that is rarely highlighted is the amazing flora and fauna of rainforest streams and rivers. On a recent trip to Cocobolo Nature Reserve in eastern Panama, I decided to photograph a random sampling of these underwater beauties. Here’s a quick composite of just a few of those species – all found in in an area not much larger than an average living room… Photographed by RTPI President Twan Leenders for the Meet Your Neighbours global biodiversity project.

Gladiator Tree Frog (Hypsiboas boans)

Our crew is back from the field! RTPI Affiliate Sean Graesser writes that this Gladiator Tree Frog (Hypsiboas boans) was a great way to end the trip. Sitting on the river side Sean says the call is unmistakable this time of year at the gorgeous Cocobolo Nature Reserve in Panama. There will be much more to come from a very successful week, including great photos and awesome finds, from Sean and RTPI President Twan Leenders soon.
