Snowy Scene
With the first official day of winter only about 10 days away, the landscape in Western New York is certainly looking the part thanks to all the recent snow we have received (and are still getting!) from a big Nor’easter that has moved its way up the coast. I took a walk this morning on some of our trails here at RTPI and captured one of my favorite scenes: eastern hemlocks (Tsuga canadensis) dripping with snow. While I was photographing the trees, the winds picked up causing the snow to come swirling down from the branches and needles, making the trail look a bit like a snow-globe....

Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for rain, so what better way to escape the elements than by popping in to our building for our open house?! As you can see, we have been feverishly working all week to get our building ready. The ornaments are hung ready to be sold, the store is stocked for holiday shoppers and the julbock is in place to greet visitors coming through the doors. Our open house is going to be a sensational event for all that come, we hope to see you there!

As rain and warm temperatures have moved across the east, some spectacular displays of rainbows have been seen throughout the area. One in particular formed over the gazebo at RTPI as the sun reflected and refracted light off of the water droplets coming down, forming the multicolored arc. If you look closely you can see a second rainbow faintly above the main one!

Here’s a sneak peek of our brand new signs, printed by our friends at 360 Graphics, for our new cell phone tour entitled, “In the Footsteps of Roger Tory Peterson.” This cell phone tour will have fifteen stops scattered around the Jamestown area, highlighting the childhood of RTP and the area where he was first inspired by nature and a life-long career devoted to art, conservation and education was jump-started.
