Snow Bunting Row

These Snow Buntings are all lined up and ready to launch to the north soon as they continue to molt into a brighter, whiter snowy color every day. Birds are getting their feathers set for spring and to look their best when finding a mate. What does this arrangement on the roof look like to you? Caption it!

Turkey Vulture

During a late afternoon on a lovely day last week I did a double take as I found an unexpected bird on the lawn – a Turkey Vulture! It had discovered a dead Eastern Chipmunk only moments earlier and was preparing to do its job. I was with my Shetland Sheepdog, Zach, who had not seen the bird over the slight hill in the lawn. I walked back to him, bent down and told him to look at this bird as I pointed. Lapland Longspur (Calcarius lapponicus)

I recently took the photo of the flock of birds, including mostly Snow Buntings and Horned Larks, mostly for a record-type shot of a Lapland Longspur (Calcarius lapponicus) mixed in. Snow Bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis)

This Snow Bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis) was being blown around by the wind, as seen by those feathers flapping in the breeze. It is a beacon of white on beautiful sunny days against the blue sky. Have you been fortunate enough to find any this winter?

Snowy Owl in Erie, Pennsylvania by Michele Rundquist-Franz

Michele Rundquist-Franz, President of the Presque Isle Audubon Society, sent me this stupendous photo of a Snowy Owl taken last Wednesday, November 12. Michele took the photo of this bird on a roof of a home in Erie, Pennsylvania, noting this was approximately the same date Snowys started showing up in the coastal city last autumn. This weekend, with a cold northerly flow in place and a lot of birders outdoors, should yield more owl sightings. Get outside and find them – and good luck!   Scott Kruitbosch Conservation & Outreach Coordinator
