This is a picture of the Chadakoin River before all of yesterday’s formidable gusts blew away much of our fall foliage here in Jamestown. Yep, the leaves are leaving. What makes me shake my head is how low the water level has been lately as our precipitation has fallen back to near average or below after a very wet summer. We sure could have used these conditions for Spiny Softshell Turtle work the rest of the year when they were more active, nesting and basking in strong numbers. The Baltimore Checkerspot (Euphydryas phaeton) will not be seen again until next year but it has such bold and seasonal colors, doesn’t it? This butterfly was built for Halloween. Every part of it has some orange and black to show off! This individual was in the gardens at RTPI in July.

Fall foliage can take on so many appearances, especially when combined with the sky above us. This scene has a look of fire and smoke as the leaves continue to change and the sky fills with lake effect clouds in the Chautauqua-Allegheny region while temperatures continue to drop. Autumn has arrived. Be sure you make the time to get outside to enjoy it because it does not last long.

It was difficult to find the sun on this cold autumn weekend thanks to the lake effect rain and clouds coming off of Lake Erie. I managed to find some light in Pennsylvania, making the woodlands feel all the warmer in the still strong sunshine. There should still be a few more weeks before we see any snow but the birds are beginning to reflect the imminent change with kinglets, always a sign of October to me, filling habitats like this.
