Autumn colors on the first day of fall
On the first day of fall it is somewhat difficult to see obvious signs of the season…but they can be found. I photographed these seemingly mid-autumn leaves a couple days ago in an area mostly shaded from the sun. In a few weeks colors like these will be bursting in abundance.

Does this happen to you? Even if you have baffles up on well-protected feeders it is the Eastern Chipmunk (Tamias striatus) collecting season as they prepare for winter by grabbing every kind of seed, acorn, nut and other tasty treat they can find. I love watching them scurry up and down trees and run as fast as they can with a mouth full of food each fall, filling the cache in their burrow. They do hibernate but not fully – I sometimes see them wake up from one of their naps, popping out to enjoy warmer winter days, especially around bird feeders, to get some extra fresh food.

It’s happening, no matter what the groundhogs say: spring is coming and the Northern Cardinals are among the first to celebrate. Snow, rain or frigid temperatures don’t matter – only the increasing daylight triggers hormonal changes in male Cardinals and usually around the last week of January their cheery song starts to warm our hearts. I heard my first Cardinal on January 31. If you haven’t heard one yet, I hope you will soon. The countdown to spring has begun!
