The boys have been staying away from me so far this spring, but at least I got a decent photo of and look at this male Yellow Warbler (Setophaga petechia). Go out and find some birds this weekend! Even if you hear more than you see at least you will be outside enjoying spring wildlife, and you might come across a song you have never heard before. Yellow Warbler

This female Yellow Warbler (Setophaga petechia) was a pleasant sight as she and a male were my first of year for the species today. She hopped out after I surprised her, surprising me right back, as I had my eyes locked on the gentleman feeding and singing a little further away. Kindly she let me snap a couple shots before going back down in the vegetation and foraging along a stream. Have your Yellow Warblers returned? I am hoping to find a pair that nest near me this year, and hoping even more that they can avoid the frequent plight of parasitism from Brown-headed Cowbirds. Scott...

Yellow Warbler

This male Yellow Warbler was more engrossed in feeding and foraging than singing and calling on a recent cloudy May day, with many, many others of the species migrating through the area. Will this guy be a resident or is he a migrant, too? I’m leaning towards the latter with how little he spoke. Male Yellow Warbler

This male Yellow Warbler is ready to take up residence in your garden! Their abundance, friendliness, and usage of habitats in open areas and often near people help make them an easy target for Brown-headed Cowbirds. After the Yellows build their nest a female Cowbird may end up putting an egg in it as well. While some Yellow Warblers will end up raising this young bird to the detriment of its own, others will build another nest over the original parasitized one.
