Green-winged Teal Size

I took this photo and I still can’t mentally process it correctly. Here we have a drake Green-winged Teal in front of an American Black Duck with Gadwall, American Coot, Mallard, among others. Teals are certainly small ducks, but that bird looks tiny compared to its friends. They are very close to one another and the little teal is closer to me…what a size difference in every feature! This guy seems like a toy in front of the Black Duck on a cold and snowy day. There will not be many more of those left… Scott Kruitbosch Conservation & Outreach...

Brown Thrasher

This Brown Thrasher (Toxostoma rufum) has been avoiding my camera for at least two weeks now. It may have a mate, but I never end up spotting any true signs of probable nesting, and certainly lack any confirmations thus far. Sadly it is a far more notable sighting than it was back in Roger Tory Peterson’s day in the Northeast. The species has dropped dramatically in abundance, and what used to be a common breeding bird for many is now a ghost in behavior and population. Jack-in-the-pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum)

An increasing variety of wildflowers is slowly blanketing our woods and fields. One of our more striking spring flowers is our Jack-in-the-pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum) – not because of its bright coloration but due to its unique aroid flower shape. Only after I took this picture I noticed the tiny spiders rapidly taking up residence in the leaves of this newly emerged plant. Life’s moving in the fast lane right now!
